Introduction

Hi, I am Tay Ren Yuan in my second year studying Diploma in Financial Business Informatics at Temasek Polytechnic. I am currently taking guided learning with investments as my topic.

The initial reason why I wanted to take Investment as my topic for guided learning is that I really wanted to try to invest because when I was younger, I couldn’t due to legit age that is required to invest and now that I am older, I didn’t have enough time to research, and I was stress out over social media when people saying you should start investing earlier.

Guided learning introduces students to the concepts and process of self-directed learning in a chosen area of inquiry. The process focuses on four stages: planning, performing, monitoring, and reflecting. Students get to plan their individual learning projects, refine, and execute the learning plan, as well as monitor and reflect on their learning progress and project. The learning will be captured and showcased through a curated portfolio. The self-directed learning project will broaden and/or deepen a student’s knowledge and skills.

Conclusion

It is interesting how I am able to learn so many things. In the beginning I only wanted to learn more about investing however through this GL project I am to learn more about building the website, creating content on Instagram and TikTok as well learning hard skills like learning the interface of the investment applications such as MooMoo trading, Grab service, Crypto.com and Magic Eden.

From my experience and findings, 2022 is really a bad year to invest at least for the short term wise. (Pandemic, bear market and the war in Ukraine) If one wishes, one could invest in safer investments like bonds and ETF which will earn you a small percentage. But low risk does not mean no risk based on my experience with the MooMoo paper trading. You will still be able to lose some money however if you want to invest for the future, diversify your portfolio or want to take some risk you can also invest a smaller amount or a amount you won’t mind losing into higher risk investment e.g. crypto, NFT, equities using Dollar Cost Averaging to minimise the loss that could happen.

I was also able to develop my TP Student Profile attributes through this. Firstly, Self-directed- I have started initiating projects by myself by attending events, and competitions and exploring more applications to test them out.

Secondly Digital & information literate- I have mostly used the internet for this GL project to read blogs, watch videos, create Instagram posts, TikTok posts and Wix website to conduct interviews so I am mostly using digital platform.

Thirdly Resilient- there were a lot of points in this journey where I felt like giving up because it was really hard to start something and research about it by myself, especially something so big alongside my other commitments for my other courses and my external CCA. For example, should I focus on NFT and crypto and not insurance? Fortunately, I have some good friends who attended some events and competitions with me as well as a good facilitator who is able to guide me and see if I am at the right pace without overwhelming me.

Lastly Innovative & entrepreneurial- I was able to attend events like GEN “Entrepreneurship World Cup Singapore National Finals 2022” and Originator Programme where I experienced the entrepreneurial lifestyle thinking of how to sell ourselves to the investor or to the public. I am also attending PolyFintech100 where I am in a team that needs to think of an innovative idea for Prudential which needs to use technology-related ideas to build up their product and service. I am also being innovative on my social media such as exploring Instagram and TikTok.

I also manage to hit all 3 of my Learning Goals that I set out to do.

  1. Expanding my investment terminology

  2. Exploring investment tools

  3. Building my own dummy investment portfolio

But most importantly I did manage to invest using real life cash which was the most accomplish I felt I had achieved for this project.

I plan to continue this journey of investment until I have hit my financial freedom. I will also be using this financial knowledge that I gained from this project for my future career/studies which will be most likely in the financial-related sector.
